Eye lid surgery vs. fillers: what is the best option?

Eye lid surgery doctors understand that patients may want to refresh their appearance, and you might be thinking about starting with the noticeable feature on your face, your eyes. The eyes can be left looking saggy, tired, and puffy due to aging or genetics. An experienced facial plastic surgeon can give you a fresh and youthful appearance.

Thanks to advances in cosmetic technology, there are now options to determine which of the two most common methods are best for your needs, eye lid surgery or fillers. There is more than likely going to be a better choice, even though both techniques are excellent options for the eye area. To decide on the best course of action, there are a few factors and differences that may help make this choice easier.

Blepharoplasty (eye lid surgery)

Eye lid surgery can be performed on either the lower and upper eye lid to freshen saggy brows, excess skin, and fat that takes away the youthful look of your eyes. Patients that have sagging brows will find eye lift surgery to be a truly transforming experience by creating a more rested and alert appearance. Fat may even be added strategically as a way to create the same effects.

In both cases, the techniques used during lower and upper eye lid surgeries are different, however, the incisions made by the doctor will be concealed in the natural folds of the eye lids. Your doctor may make the decision to make the incision during a lower eye lid procedure on the inside of the lid.

It is recommended that patients recovering from eye lid surgery wait 10 days before resuming regular activities and if you are looking to take part in more strenuous activities will need to wait up to 3 weeks.

Dermal fillers

Surgery to the eyelids is an excellent way to treat the eyes for a youthful appearance. Understandably, not everyone is comfortable with the idea of surgery. Thankfully, for these patients, surgery is no longer the only solution with the availability of fillers.

The treatment process takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes, is commonly used on the lower lid, and is done in the doctor’s office. The filler is injected in the under-eye area and is made of a hyaluronic acid gel, this procedure will decrease shadowing under the eyes by filling any hollows.

A patient with no brow sagging or excess skin can be a good candidate for fillers if they want to smooth the wrinkles around their forehead, brows, and eyes. The best thing is that filler treatments do not require any downtime, however, in the first 24 hours you can expect to see redness and swelling.

Unfortunately, unlike eye lid surgery, the results of a filler are not permanent, to maintain results you would need to stick to all follow-up appointments.
